Nobody's Perfect at the Civic Center

"Nobody's Perfect"
We had an awesome time today at the Civic Center watching the stage performance of "Nobody's Perfect"!  The story is about a deaf girl, Megan, who attends school with her hearing friends.  A new girl named Alexis arrives and all of the girls learn that "nobody's perfect".  It was a great opportunity for our students to see a deaf stage performer.  "Megan" is seen here posing with the kids from Capitol View for a photo op!
It was a great day!

Greetings Everyone!!

I hope you all had a lovely holiday.  Ours was very nice.  Well, the days are winding down to the end of the holiday break for the students and also are winding down to the day of my surgery.  I am here at school today continuing to work to leave good lesson plans for my students.  I will be checking my school email periodically to make sure everything is going ok.  Please remember that you can contact Mrs. Holton through my school email darleen.cordero@dmps.k12.ia.us -- please let her know if you have any concerns or questions.  Thank you so much.

Mrs. Lisa Holton

Greetings Parents and Friends,
I would like to introduce you to Mrs. Holton.  She will be my substitute teacher for the next 6 to 8 weeks.  Unfortunately, I will be out due to medical needs.  I will have surgery on Dec. 31st.  I hope to be back with my students sometime in February.  I will miss them but am greatly encouraged to know that a very capable substitute teacher will be with them during these next several weeks.  Mrs. Holton is from Minnesota.  She recently moved to Iowa with her husband.  She has worked as a teacher of the Deaf/HH in Minnesota for the past several years.  She is a SKILLED signer!!  I couldn't be happier to be able to leave my students in such capable hands!  Please know that you can contact her at my school email address after Winter break.  She has access to my email account and can reach me at home, if needed.
Today Mrs. Holton was with me all day as a "shadow substitute" so that she can make a smooth transition into my classroom.  She has been updated on all of my student's IEP's and important information.  She will be provided with lesson plans/schedule, etc. to facilitate the students receiving all of the lessons and instruction that needs to happen for them.  Please let me or Polly know if you have any concerns or questions.  I want you to know I've worked hard to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Thank you so much,
Mrs. Cordero

Hmmm...Will it look like this tomorrow?

If yes, stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the snow day!

Friday, December 4, 2009

Greetings Everyone!!
I'm told that snow could be arriving soon!  It feels cold enough for it!!
We've been experiencing some illness here at school.  I was out for the afternoon yesterday but the students did well.  One of our classmates has been out since Tuesday  :(
We're working hard to make sure everyone is washing their hands!!  Several staff members have been out, as well as many students.  Yes, 'tis the season...  :(   -- Hopefully, we will get our "bugs" out of our systems before the holidays!
We've been working hard to add new words to our vocabularies!!  Please continue to fingerspell words to your young folks with explanations of meaning.  They need lots of exposure to words, words, words!!
Hope you have a nice weekend!

We had a good day today.  I needed to be out this a.m. and the students did very well with the substitute teacher.  Good job, kids!!  This afternoon, our students worked on verb charts.  We are learning about how verbs are used in sentences.  If you happen to have situations where you are talking about "actions" - you might discuss with your child what the verb is and how it changes depending on when the action happened.  Thank you for any support you can offer.  Remember, it takes a village to raise a child :)  Have a wonderful weekend!

Field Trip

Weaving at the Historical Museum
Mrs. LeBlanc's students enjoyed a field trip today!  One of the things they learned about was weaving and looms!  Very interesting!  If they come home this evening trying to describe what they experienced, perhaps this blog entry will help!  :)   I hope they will write to me in their journal all about their experience!

Greetings Everyone!

Early dismissal today means a short time for reading and writing instruction.  I hope the students will work on writing in their journal and doing their evening reading.  Everyone did good work today!  Most of the students have finished writing about their sewing activity.  We will be putting together our "books" soon.  I'm waiting to hear if we can get our pages printed by the East zone office.  Hopefully we will be able to get nice color pages printed for our books.  Hope you all have a nice evening!
